- 100% EXEMPT FROM 'OBAMACARE'! -
These types of programs are included as a legal exemption in the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Healthcare and health insurance are changing at a rapid pace. The passage of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, in 2010 has left many families wondering what will happen to their insurance rates, whether they’ll still be able to visit their preferred doctors, and just exactly what kind of care they will receive.
Uncertainty surrounding the new law has led many people to investigate alternatives to health insurance. One option that is growing in popularity is medical sharing programs. Individuals who participate in medical sharing programs that meet the law’s criteria are specifically exempt from the mandate to purchase health insurance, which makes these programs appealing.
What are medical sharing programs? Medical sharing programs, also referred to as healthcare sharing ministries, are organizations of like-minded individuals who have agreed to share in the cost of each other’s medical treatment.
The members of the program contribute a monthly share determined by the size of their family and the program option they have chosen. Once the sharing threshold has been met by the member, the bills are submitted for sharing, and their eligibility for sharing is based on the member-voted guidelines of the program.
It should be noted that medical sharing programs are not the same as health insurance. A program of this type is a voluntary arrangement by a group of individuals and the organization that facilitates this sharing is a not for profit. Some medical sharing programs require individuals to meet certain health or lifestyle criteria in order to participate.
Medi-Share, a Christian-based Program, is one of the most popular medical sharing programs in America. The ministry has been in existence since 1993 and members have shared more than $825 million in medical bills since then. The program operates on the idea that taking care of each other is a way of life for Christians. The mission is to connect and equip Christians to carry each other’s everyday burdens.
Medi-Share offers seven different sharing levels based on the “annual household portion” preference, along with a program for seniors that goes alongside Medicare. Once the annual household portion is met by the member, 100% of eligible medical bills will be published for sharing by the other members of Medi-Share.
A Faith-Based Way, Medi-Share members affirm that they adhere to the ministry’s Statement of Faith, and are active members of the Christian community.
Medical bill sharing programs have seen large membership growth in recent months, and Medi-Share is no exception. To gain a thorough understanding of Medi-Share and how the program may work for you and your family, visit the Medi-Share page.
