Entry Foyer:
The main entry should give a good first impression for the rest of the home, while also offering good functionality. It has to be welcoming and inviting for both family and guests as well as reflecting the needs and lifestyle of all those who will be coming and going from this well-used space. The sample board for the entry was done in more of the style of a mood board ‘collage’ in order to convey an overall idea of the various objects and furnishings that will be used throughout the space in this area of the home.
The entry showcases a first glimpse of the design and color scheme of the rest of the home on a smaller scale. The walls are done in a lighter blue from the monochromatic scheme to help brighten the space. Wallpaper in a black and white abstract floral print with a chair rail trim in true white, as with all the trim in the home, will also be featured on the wall to the right as you enter the foyer through the double doors.
Furniture items in dark espresso brown found in the entry such as the low console table will be seen repeated in the main furnishings of the rest of the home, as will lighting fixtures in brushed nickel with frosted glass in several coordinated styles for design variety. Upholstered furniture and pillows in beige, taupe, and gray solids and prints will also be seen throughout the decor of the home.
Windows from the adjacent rooms to either side, as well as the glass window lites of the double entry doors, give ample natural light to feel at ease as you move into and function through the foyer, aided by carefully placed artificial light on the ceiling and along the wall. This central hallway links to the rest of the home leading to the living, dining and kitchen areas as well as the powder room at the end of the hall and features visual continuity with each of these spaces.

...Main focal points of the entry will be a bold linear contemporary brushed nickel and glass chandelier pendant centrally placed for ambient lighting and a modern artwork piece lit with a wall-washer downlight at the back wall to draw the eye through the space. Other lighting featured will be a pair of pocket sconces at each end of the hallway repeating the theme of nickel and white frosted glass.
Additional art pieces and decor such as a potted jade plant, carved urn, sculpture and an embellished wall mirror will serve to add dramatic impact to the foyer. Many of these items will also serve a functional purpose making them both ornamental and practical – a decorative urn that doubles as an umbrella stand, and of course a mirror for last-minute checkups before answering the door or departing the house.
Upon arrival to the home, there will be a place to put letters and other items on a small table top. It can also be used as a place to drop keys and other belongings, or to place useful objects such as a tissue box or other decorative and functional items. Magazines, newspapers and other mail can be placed in the stand below or in a decorative basket for this purpose.
A key rack in nickel and espresso on the wall will also help keep keys organized and handy. The long upholstered bench offers a place to rest and wait for other guests or family members to gather for arrival or departure. A small cozy chair near the coat rack also gives a place to sit and put on or remove boots and shoes. The decorative coat rack in espresso brown wood can hold needed items such as coats, cardigans and handbags for easy accessibility, and even looks nice when not in use.
The flooring of the entry features a waterproof luxury wood-look vinyl tile in a warm lighter brown. This adds another subtle element of color and wood-like texture to the design. Additional wood texture is seen in the carved wood storage credenza in the hallway. This wood plank vinyl tile flooring will be continued into the dining room, further linking these two spaces visually, and creating an uninterrupted flow between the two areas.
An overdyed Kilim area rug in soft blues adds yet another layer of muted color and texture as well as ‘old world’ style while still looking up to date with a modern distressed finish. It also offers a preview and a visual link to the blue patterned rugs for the dining room, and the overdyed grey Persian area rug in the living room. Having an intentionally ‘worn’ look means that it will stand up to the wear and tear of a high traffic space such as an entry and still look great for years to come.
