Kitchen & Dining Area - To see full photo of this room please click HERE.
The kitchen and dining area continues the theme of monochromatic light blues punctuated by contemporary furniture and cabinetry in espresso brown with a soothing mix of light neutrals in taupe, beige and cream. These elements of color work together to create a visually pleasing balance of light and dark to bring greater definition into the space.
Some of these elements have texture, color and interesting shapes while others are calm and neutral to provide support and substance. Still others display pattern, with repetition of similar pattern seen in strategic areas throughout the room to pull the space together. These repeated motifs also bring visual variety and movement to the design to lead the eye throughout the space.
This room features an open space plan connecting the kitchen and dining areas, with a peninsula snack bar providing a division to define these two areas of activity. Both the snack bar and kitchen cabinetry will feature a creamy white marble countertop creating a cohesive look for the space. The dark espresso cabinets will provide a nice contrast with the white while also offering plenty of functional storage for the kitchen area.
The lower wall panel of the snack bar peninsula facing the dining room will be in a light blue, against which are seen the contemporary lines of the barstool chairs in a dark brown leather with a post and foot rest in chrome. Their minimal design adds to the modern feel with curved and squared lines which support that of the bolder shapes of other furniture pieces such as the chairs in the dining set.
Central in emphasis to the design and function of the room is the large wooden dining table with striking chairs that create an interesting pattern of negative space against the lighter backdrop of the room. The spare clean lines of the rectangular table are accented by the contemporary asymmetric graphic openwork of the dining chairs. These help to keep the space open and airy next to the solidity of the large table.
Upholstered chair cushions with décor pillows for comfort and back support add further pattern, color, shape and texture to the design. The more rounded forms of the cushions and pillows also help soften up the sharper angles of the table and chairs, and other furnishings in the room. The large plush area rug beneath the dining table contributes additional softness as well as color and pattern.
This area rug further emphasizes the central focus of the seated dining area, while also offering balance and repetition for the large rectangular form of the table itself. Repetition of the pattern seen in the rug is also seen in the fabric choice for the covered cornice of the shades. Further pattern in a similar color of blue used for the area rug is also found in a small runner beneath the modern wood and distressed zinc sideboard table.
The gray-blue of the rugs is echoed in the travertine tile flooring choice for the kitchen area in ‘blue moon’. A lighter blue in the same color family is used for the linear subway tiles in ‘sky’ for the backsplash in the kitchen. The wall tile will contribute both subtle color and texture to the design, as well as creating visually interesting shapes with an interlocking linear pattern.
The main flooring for the dining room features waterproof luxury vinyl tile planks in a lighter warm sable color. This offers a nice contrast with the darker espresso furnishings such as the buffet, hutch, baker’s style wine rack, sideboard and of course the dining set. This flooring continues into the entry for a further visual link and open flow between these two areas.
Lighting in the space is well provided for by both natural lighting and artificial ambient and task lighting. Ample natural lighting enters the room from several windows, and a large glass bi-fold door that will open out onto the adjacent deck. Lamps and lighting fixtures designed for functional ambient and task lighting include recessed ceiling lights, pendants, floor lamp, under-cabinet lighting, and a surface mount light.
Central lighting from the large pendant above the dining table brings further emphasis to this focal point, and beckons you into the sitting area as do the smaller pendants over the snack bar. All lighting fixtures will have dimmers for energy savings and to create a nice ambience when desired. A surface mount fixture in the kitchen will give needed overall ambient lighting with recessed lighting giving more focused light for this area.
More specific task lighting is given by under-cabinet lighting for countertop activities. A lighted microwave hood gives additional focused lighting for cooking, while up-lighting above the cabinets provides a nice glow to highlight décor objects placed there. All of the lighting fixtures for the kitchen and dining area in a nickel finish with white frosted glass.
A coordinating floor lamp with a polished steel base, glass diffuser, and white textured paper shade features a narrow drum shape that repeats the similar lines of the other lighting fixtures in the room. With sleek lines and minimalist detailing it fits in with the overall design without overpowering other elements in the decor. Its small footprint also assures against tripping and offers an uncluttered look that blends seamlessly with the other furnishings.
This space seeks to harmoniously tie together the color elements of browns and blues with lots of whites and grays all working together with a little added shine from metallic finishes and polished surfaces. An eclectic modern mix of subtle color, texture and pattern – with functional user-friendly furnishings that carry appealing visual impact - make this space an inviting and elegant place to dine, cook and entertain that is meant to be used and enjoyed.
