MY (VERY POSITIVE!) 'SWEDISH DEATH CLEANING' EXPERIENCE:
(THIS IS THE ENTIRE ARTICLE FROM THE BLOG ENTRY ORIGINALLY POSTED HERE. ALSO SEE BELOW FOR PHOTOS OF A NUMBER OF THE BOXES & ITEMS ULTIMATELY DONATED. CLICK HERE AND HERE TO SEE SOME OF THE INDIVIDUAL ITEMS AS WELL ON ANOTHER PAGE IN THIS SITE.)
AMAZINGLY FREEING!
There is an exclamation point in the title of this blog post because my 'Swedish Death Cleaning', or de-cluttering experience, was a very positive (and freeing!) one.
IT'S GREAT EVEN WHEN A LITTLE YOUNGER & 'NOT-SO-OLD':
I had wanted to do something like this for a long time and, while neither my husband nor myself are in 'old age', we still wanted to downsize our belongings and not have so much 'stuff' to deal with.
POSITIVE & NEGATIVE MOTIVATION:
One of the recent motivations that we had was the experience of my parents who had retired to an even larger home than the one they had previously lived and therefore kept and accumulated even more things.
I have to admit that it is very 'motivating' to see what can happen when someone doesn't engage in some type of de-cluttering and downsizing and how destructive that can be, in so many ways.
GOOD INTENTIONS NEED ACTION OTHERWISE DIRE CONSEQUENCES:
They always had the sincere intention of going through their possessions, but never got around to it. Then, of course, as time went on they were unable to do the task at all.
Even worse is that the clutter and accumulation meant that they were not able to really enjoy their belongings and that many of these things also became unusable to do mildew and other infestation.
ORGANIZING VS. DISPOSING:
In short, in regard to our own things, I decided to start throwing out, donating or giving away most of what we had - even furniture and larger items. It really boiled down to the fact that it's things from another life, a life I no longer had or even needed or wanted any longer.
I watched a Vlog from a professional organizer advising that one should not just 'organize' all of their things, but to get rid of a good portion of it. Hard for me to hear at first, but he was right. In truth, the more unessential items I rid myself of, the better I felt.
CONTINUATION FROM BLOG - A PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESS THAT WORKED:
Cleaning out your personal belongings is a very psychological process and I had to do a few things to accomplish the downsizing and giving away of many of our items. It is NOT an easy task, especially when it's your own things that you are used to seeing and using for many years and that may have sentimental meaning and value.
This is made even more difficult when these items may also have material value. There are ways to recoup some of this monetary value, such as online selling sites like Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, Facebook Marketplace Local, etc. You can also host a garage or yard sale. Getting some compensation for your treasured items helps to give them value and make them easier to part with.
AN EASIER WAY:
However, in my case, I didn't want to take the time to sell online or in-person. Donating was a much better way for me. While I have sold some of our things on eBay and Etsy in the past, it can be very time-consuming and tedious. Also, going through almost ALL of your things can be tedious enough - especially with all of the re-packing and, worse, the many decisions to be made.
Donation has one advantage in that you can sometimes write off a portion of the value from your taxes so long as the organization you're donating to is a non-profit (501c3, etc.). This was not our motivation for donating however, and one of the places that we donated quite a few of our higher-ticket items to was not a non-profit.
A BETTER REASON:
Once I had gotten down to the 'better stuff' and no longer really having things that I wanted just to toss or donate to a thrift store, I needed a better place - and a better reason. Just by chance - or actually by God's providence - right when I was at this point I saw a local news article about a new up-cycling boutique store that had recently opened up nearby.
This store gave a percentage of all profits to several different charities such as IHS to help re-house formerly homeless families as well as the Humane Society and Coastline Clean-up, etc. They were also willing to give what they would have paid me to a few fundraisers that I had designated. It was a win-win!
VARIOUS OPTIONS:
Having several different options of where to give decor and furnishings was a great help in restoring motivation as the process went along. One of these was a local charity thrift store that supports many essential local needs and causes, the Assistance League of Hawaii.
Their philanthropic programs include Operation School Bell to provide clothing and other needs for schoolchildren, Operation Wildlife to help preserve endangered species, and We Care that helps children in hospital emergency rooms and hospice centers by providing comfort and special teddy bears!
WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN WHY & HOW
In short, you have to answer: Who - who are you doing this for; What - what items do you want to de-clutter & what will you need to do so; Where - where will you give, gift, sell or donate your items; When - when is a good time to start and what is your timeline; Why - what are your reasons and what is your motivation; How - how you will do it.
