Color Scheme 3 - Tertiary – ‘Peaceful Haven’
Aim: To create a warm, comfortable and inviting home environment with family-friendly materials.
The goal is to provide a cohesive design with fabrics and finishes that work together to provide a cozy and serene nature-inspired space. A Tertiary color scheme in warm earthy colors will complement the use of materials such as soft comfy leathers in a dark brown color, wood furniture with a warm reddish glow, and natural weave textured fabrics.
This color-scheme will be focused mainly on muted tertiary shades of Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, and Yellow-Green. Additionally, tones of these colors will be used for more neutral Browns and Beiges, adding to the warm earthiness of the theme.
The colors used will help to inspire the mood of the space. Red-orange is said to bring a feeling of warmth; yellow-orange friendly optimism and energy; and yellow-green imparting a feeling of balance. The browns and beiges used to complement the color scheme will also bring even more of a sense of earthy grounding.
The relaxed ambience created by these earth tones will help to create a balanced, peaceful and homey interior space. They will also serve to create a quiet and enveloping cocoon-like feel to help ease the mind and feel relaxed. The muted colors will also lend themselves to the use of more natural fabrics and coarse textures that impart an atmosphere of simplicity and peace that feels balanced and connected to nature.
Starting in the family room, there will again be a feature wall behind the sectional sofa in a darker color to reduce light reflectancy from the television. This wall will be painted in Resene Moroccan Spice, a subdued red-orange ochre. The remaining walls, as well as the adjacent study, will be painted in a muted yellow-green, Resene Alpine. The ceilings in these rooms, as well as the rest of the home, will be done in Resene Beeswax, a very soft warm yellow-orange-green that works well with all the colors used in this tertiary color scheme.
The trim – baseboards, window and door surrounds, and ceiling molding - will be done in Resene Pearl Lusta, which is a light cream with a hint of yellow. The flooring proposed in these two rooms will be Mohawk’s SmartStrands which is a soft and durable carpeting with built-in stain protection and easy clean-up, making it perfect for families with kids and pets. This will be in a slight reddish-brown color, adding to the theme of warm earthy tones and shades.
The main entry, hallway, and powder room will be painted in a lighter earthy pigment of yellow ochre color, Resene Anzac, to help brighten up these more enclosed spaces. This rich warm mustard yellow will be accented with the same creamy white trim in Resene Pearl Lusta as in the family room and study, as well as Resene Beeswax for the ceilings.
Flooring proposed for the entry, powder room and hallway areas as well as the dining room is Mohawk’s luxury vinyl tile in a rich Warm Cider color. This faux-wood flooring is waterproof, durable, insulating and soft underfoot making it a good choice for a busy entryway and dining area. Its warm wood look in addition to its insulating qualities will add to the warm feel of the design, and coordinates well with the other flooring color choices.
The dining area will once again utilize chair rails, also in Resene Pearl Lusta as with all the trim in the home. Below the chair rail will be a deep mineral yellow-green, Resene Alpine, and above will be a coordinating color in a rich warm yellow-ochre, Resene Anzac. The wall below the snack bar facing the dining area will be done in the darker red-orange accent color of Moroccan Spice to add a little ‘pop’ to the space.
The kitchen will feature a textural grasscloth backsplash tile above the stove area in Driftwood, while the back wall over the sink area will be painted in Resene Alpine. The flooring will be a 12x24 Travertine Tile in Veneto Noce, with marbled earthy browns and beiges. This flooring will flow into the laundry room, with the walls in this room being painted in Resene Anzac to add more brightness to the space.
The curtain choice shown in the chart of Resene Naturalle is to represent that this color scheme design lends itself to more textural fabric choices with woven natural fibers. This can also apply to the choices made in upholstery for furnishings as well as décor items such as pillows and accent rugs. The goal of the color scheme for this home is to evoke the earthy feel of such elements as terra cotta, warm spices, and autumn leaves with their subdued spectrum of harvest gold, red ochre, and mossy green.
