Color Scheme 2 - Monochromatic Soft Blues'‘Calm Oasis’
Aim: To create a calm oasis that is sedate, peaceful and refreshing with a cool, casual modern sophistication.
The lighter blues used in this monochromatic color scheme help to evoke a feeling of peace and contentment to create a serene sanctuary for the family. Simple pieces with pared down lines will give it a clean modern edge. This palette represents a range of only blues with the use of contemporary furnishings in dark espresso giving it a crisp contrast.
Fresh white trim on the windows, baseboards and moldings in Resene White with ceilings in a light blue-grey Resene Catskill White throughout the home will further delineate the clean lines of this color scheme providing a nice contrast with the dark furniture (a wood stain is included in Resene Bark, if needed). The curtain choice of Resene Voile is there to represent that this design would lend itself to softer silkier fabrics and/or heavier drapery with a subtle sheen and subdued textural pattern.
Additional décor accessories such as lighting fixtures and ceiling fans with blades in dark espresso and brushed nickel hardware will help add to the casual modern-edged appeal. Contemporary art pieces and mirrors framed in black or dark wood will add further contrast and interest with the light blue interior colors.
The entry will feature a lighter blue, Resene Breathless, to help offset this darker enclosed space. A long horizontal wall mirror will be placed above an espresso brown console table along the right side of the wall of the hallway to lend even more light reflection. The powder room at the end of the hall will be done in the same lighter blue of Resene Breathless as it also has no windows and no natural lighting of its own.
A large framed mirror over the sink will also help to reflect light in that space. The modern theme will be carried through in this small but well-used room with the use of a white porcelain vessel style sink atop an espresso brown cabinet with brushed nickel hardware, and matching framed mirror.
The flooring of the foyer, hallway, and dining room will be a lighter polished look faux maple vinyl tile by Paradigm to add glow and warmth, and to add further contrast with the darker wood furnishings. This durable, waterproof flooring is also very family-friendly. (Area rugs and runners would also be added later on to this design.)
The flooring in the family room and study will feature durable Berber carpeting with a thicker loop pile. As the family will most likely spend much of their time in these rooms, the carpeting will add comfort, softness, and warmth underfoot. As a media room, carpeting will also help to mute excess sound reverberation.
The casual ‘speckled’ look of this carpeting will go with the modern décor and also help to tie in the various subtle shades of beige, taupe-gray, and brown. It also offers easy cleaning and helps keep dirt from showing. The medium beige taupe will also provide a good grounding color for the overall design. The family room uses a solid darker blue, Resene El Nino, for the feature wall behind the sectional sofa.
As the room will be often used for t.v. viewing, this offers a more non-reflective color for the opposite wall. The somewhat darker blue color will also help to enhance the darker ‘movie room’ appeal of this space as well as offering a large wall area for the display of a nice modern art piece to enhance the modern furnishings. The other walls in this room, and in the study, will have a more subdued blue tone in Resene Spindle to counter-balance with the darker feature wall.
To the left of the entry on the other side of the house is the dining room and kitchen area. The dining room has plenty of windows as well as a large patio door. The blue used here will be toned down to a calming light color, Resene Spindle, to work in well with the ample natural lighting, and to give more visibility for the activities at hand.
A dinette in espresso brown and modern lighting fixtures will help to tie this space together with the other adjoining areas of the home. Additionally, treatment in the Resene White again for the woodwork trim as well as Resene Catskill White for the ceiling brings a cohesive look to the design.
The flooring in the kitchen will have a darker blue-grey marbled travertine tile. The backsplash area above will have a lighter blue linear glass tile. The kitchen cabinetry proposed will be espresso brown walnut with brushed nickel hardware. Stainless steel appliances and creamy white solid surface countertops will serve to balance the darker wood colors.
The travertine flooring will flow into the laundry area off of the kitchen for more ‘water-friendly’ utility. It will also feature the same lighter blue of Resene Spindle as in the dining room further helping to brighten up this smaller enclosed space. In sum, a modern, user-friendly sophistication will define this monochromatic color scheme design.
